Image description

The Departure from Tréport of Queen Victoria, 7 September 1843 by Eugène Isabey (Paris 1803 - Lagny 1886). The scene shows man-of-war ships in naval salute being fired at the harbour of Treport, commemorating the end of Queen Victoria's state visit to France in the first week of September 1843. As a souvenir of her stay at the castle of Eu, Louis-Phillipe gave her an album of 32 watercolours by various artists, including Isabey, who depicted her departure. Queen Victoria recorded in her diary how delighted she was with the gift, which is now housed at Windsor. Formerly attributed to Richard Parkes Bonnington.
