Nathan Drake (Lincoln c.1728 - York 1778). Oil painting on canvas, Francis Drake (1696-1771) by Nathan Drake (Lincoln c.1728 - York 1778) , monogrammed and dated: N.D. pinxt 1758. A painted oval half-length portrait of Francis Drake, facing, head turned to the left, gazing to the left, in a powdered wig, wearing a red velvet coat and waistcoat with slim gold braiding and gold buttons, white stock. A similar portrait of Francis Drake (1696-1771), York Historian and author of Eboracum, by Nathan Drake is hung in York City Art Gallery. The artist was no relation of the sitter. Found in Treasurer's house cellars 1974. Picture taken out of storage in cellars Jan 1975. Cellars unsuitable due to damp etc. Inscription on back 'Francis Drake F.S.A... a celebrated Surgeon and Antiquary in the City of York, the History of which is published under the title of Eboracum. The same gentleman was also the compiler of the Parliamentary History a work daily increasing in authority and replete with valuable matter. Mr Drake died...(date?) at his son's house in Beverley, Yorkshire (the Revd. Fr. Drake D.D) was interred in St Mary's Church in that town and an handsome marble monument with suitable inscription erected to his ...' .
