British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man with a Dog by British (English) School, circa 1670-1680. A three-quarter length portrait of a young man, seated, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, his left arm resting on a stone ledge, his left hand caressing the chin of a dog, his right hand is on the dog's head he fondles its ear. The dog's head and shoulders are seen at the extreme left. He has on a blond curled, full-bottomed wig, and is wearing a brown satin cloak which is draped across him, relealing full white sleeves and a lace cravat. A crimson curtain is draped behind his head. A window, top left, shows a landscape with a tree and sky. Signed? l.r. Possibly a member of the Paston family. White catalogue number number 23 l.r.
