British (English) School. Oil painting on canvas, Called Sir Hugh Stewkeley, 2nd Bt (1638-1719) but really Edward, 4th & last Lord Stawell (c. 1685 - 1755), British (English) School. c.1730. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to left, facing, wearing a wig and a blue coat and long buttoned brown waistcoat with silver-braided edges and pockets, a sword hilt showing on his left, his left hand on his hip, his right holding a hat. Sir Hugh Stewkeley (1638-1719) was the last male of his line, with the same Christian name of the first baronet of Hinton Ampner. He was the father of Mary, who brought the house in marriage to Edward, 4th Lord Stawell (c.1685-1755). The identity of the sitter is not wholly certain, since this portrait would appear to have been painted around 1730, and it was previously attributed to Thomas Hudson (1701-79).
