STREET VENDOR OFFERING LAST SPEECH OF ALLENDE, 1973-09-11 (photo)

A Chilean street vendor encourages people to buy the last speech of late Socialist President Salvador Allende outside the National Stadium prior to a concert in homage to Allende, in Santiago September 4. Allende was toppled by former chief of the army and now retired General Augusto Pinochet in a coup on September 11, 1973. The concert is given to mark the 25th anniversary of Allende's death, who allegedly committed suicide the day of the coup. Allende made that speech during the moments the coup took place, through the only radio station which had not yet been taken over by the military. CD/HB/SB
