Smugglers are passing the time with cards while waiting for their boat in this scene. A watch on the wall beside the pistol shows that it is a quarter to one in the morning. The Russian clothes of the old man in the centre reflect the important trading links between the countries of the Baltic Sea and the North East at this time. The picture is one of many smuggling subjects painted by Henry Perlee Parker during the twenty years he spent in Newcastle.
