Poor Indonesians queue up by a truck to buy food in Kadipaten in west Java, 200 kilometres east of Jakarta February 19. Chinese shopowners, seeking to protect their future are selling commodities to residents at discount prices. The Chinese constitute only about three per cent of the nation's 200 million people, but they control much of the commerce through the archipelago and are traditional targets for attack during times of hardship.
