ORPHANED ELEPHANTS ROAM THE KNYSNA WOODLANDS, 1999-07-18 (photo)

FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-SAFRICA-ELEPHANTS - Orphaned elephants rescued from a cull in the country's Kruger National Park roam the Knysna Elephant Park in this forested area on the doorstep of South Africa's famed Garden Route. At the turn of the century 500 wild pachyderms wandered the woodlands, but the depredations of man has cut the number to one 50-year-old cow who is just a few years away from death. The 40,000 people who visit the park each year can walk and talk with the gentle adolescent giants, Harry, Sally and Duma. Picture taken 12JUL99. MH/FMS
