A Photographie de John Burke [1845-1900] of a group of British officers of the 51st Regiment, taken in 1878 and published in the album 'The Afghan War, Attogk to Jellalabad, Gandamak and Surkhab'. This photograph shows the wide variety of uniforms worn by British officers when serving in the field. Three local servants or scouts sit at the back of the group. The 51st King's Own Light Infantry (Second Yorkshire West Riding Regiment) served on the Indian Frontier between 1875 and 1887. In the Second Afghan War (1878-1879) the regiment served in the Fourth Infantry Brigade under Brigadier General W Browne.
