Image description

New Ålesund 1959. Photo from the "King Bay mines" in Ny Ålesund where the fourth serious explosion accident in the "King Bay mine" on Svalbard happened on November 5, 1962. 21 people died. The picture shows miners in action at the entrance to these mines. (The previous three explosion accidents in King Bay were in 1948, 1952 and 1953 with 15, nine and 16 dead, respectively). Large shortcomings and fraud were revealed, and the case ended with distrust in the Storting and Industry Minister Kjell Holler had to go. The Storting then decided to wind up "King Bay" August 23. 1963, and at the same time the Gerhardsen government had to step down. The bourgeois and John Lyng took over the government. Ntb/archive
