Manned Space Flight, USA, Apollo 11 Third stage (S-IVB) of the Apollo 11 Saturn V launch vehicle, 1969. The third stage of the rocket is being raised in the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Centre, Cape Canaveral, Florida, for mating with its second stage. The S- IVB is powered by a single J2 engine which provides a thrust of 225,000 lb. The three-stage Saturn V was the largest rocket ever built, and was used by NASA on all its manned missions to the Moon. Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin ÔBuzzÕ Aldrin and Michael Collins on board, was launched on 16th July 1969. ©SSPL/NASA
