Image description

Unknown Australian Official Photographer; / Australian Official Photograph / Amended 18/06/04, file 04/2840, folio pg 4-7, Sarah Cowan. Hurley diary notes for 22nd October 1917: 'Weather unpropitious Wilkins & I went to Savy to our 69th Squadron (Flying). We enjoyed the two hours motor run, though it was infernally cold. The avenues & foliage are taking on those wondrous shades of Autumn & the whole country is a riot of marvellous colorings. The leaves are falling & winter is fast coming. We took a couple flashlight pictures, at the hangars & returned to St Pol where we put up at the comfortable Hotel de France.' MLMSS 389, JG 15/10/13 Ministers caption: 'Lieutenant Stanley George Brearley, pilot, and Lt Robert Harold Taylor, observer, of No. 69 Squadron (Australian), Royal Flying Corps (RFC), starting out for a night bombing operation. Savy France 22nd October 1917.' They are seated in a RAF RE-8 aircraft; a two-seater biplane with forward and rear firing machine guns, mostly used in artillery observation and night bombing roles. Note the numerals on the top fuselage decking and white circle Squadron insignia. (See also E01177)
