Image description

Manchester Farm's field along with many other Kentucky horse owners are keeping there fields empty of mares and foals because of a mysterious illness that scientists now call "mare reproductive loss syndrome" that has affected the thoroughbred industries in Lexington, Kentucky. Throughout Central Kentucky farms more than 500 foals have died from this illness that experts believed to be caused by toxins from molds growing on pasture grasses which has caused spontaneous abortions and stillbirths in mares whose pregnancies are coming to tearm. A study of the problem estimated losses in Kentucky alone could amount to more than $135 million. Picture taken May 12, 2001. JPS/ME
