Jun 06, 1954 - Escape from Italy's Sing-Sing: when four criminals escaped from Volterra's fortress-like prison on Monday night they were sought by police and police dogs all over Italy. They were Carlo Bollino, 30, a wild bandit who wasn't due for release until the year 2000, Rubina Bonora, 35 thief and murderer not legally due for release until 2030; Peitro Bagliesi, 31 serving a life sentence and Pasquale Rossi, 33, confirmed delinqeunt with 14 years to serve. Their break-out in plan and execution rivalled some of the escape and evasion stories of American and British prisoners of war during the last war. With little more than their hands, a file and a scalpel, they managed to bore through three great walls. to investigators. Their escape went through the wall of their cell into an adjoining one which was unlocked. From there they crossed a corridor into another unlocked cell. Through the walls of this cell they reached an unused chapel. To break out of this they had to go through emerged from the prison and walked calmly through a section of Volterra. On Wednesday- they were located and re-arrested without resistance
