ISRAELI TROOPS WATCHING PALESTINIANS THROWING STONES IN HEBRON, 1998-01-15 (photo)

Israeli soldiers, armed and in protective helmets, watch as Palestinians down the street in the "Casbah" area of the city throw stones at them January 15. A Palestinian boy behind a partially closed shop shutter also watches. Israel called reinforcements into the area when some Jewish settlers tried to cross into the Palestinian section of the city to pray at a Jewish shrine located there, but were turned back. Some stones were hurled near the Beit Hadassah Jewish settlement today, the first anniversary of the Israeli troop redeployment in Hebron. MIDEAST
