Immanuel Kant, German philosopher, late 18th century. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) became professor of logic and metaphysics at the university of Konigsberg, Prussia in 1770. Kant published a variety of articles on the natural sciences, geophysics and astronomy. In 'Allgemeine Naturgesichte und Theorie des Himmels' of 1755 he successfully predicted the existence of Uranus 26 years before William Herschel officially discovered the planet. In later life Kant wrote a number of philosophical texts- 'Critique of Pure Reason' (1781), 'Critique of Practical Reason' (1788) and 'Critique of Judgment' (1790). Highly influential, these writings have been said to inspire the work of Hegel, Schelling and Fichte. ©SSPL/Science Museum
