The UN said yesterday that AIDS was still in its "explosive phase" and that by the year 2000 it expected 90 percent of patients to require hospital attention, which would put an enormous strain on health service resources world-wide. Every day, according to the UN, 8,500 people become infected, and it estimates that by the millennium 30 million people will carry the virus.
