Guanacos, Valley of the Cuevas, Andes mountains, Chile, 1820-1821. Guanacos are hoofed mammals of the camel family, related to the llama. Their flesh is used for food and the hide for clothing, although unlike the llama they are not domesticated. In the background, travellers take shelter in a 'casucha' or hut below the pass of the volcano; altitude sickness is a problem here. 'The mountain on the left chiefly exhibits the clay slate'.
