Execution notices of Devlin and Burns, 25 April 1952. Certificates of the surgeon and declarations of the sheriff on the prison doors at Walton Gaol, Liverpool. When Edward Devlin and Alfred Burns were hanged, double hangings had ceased in most prisons. They had been convicted of the murder of Alice Rimmer in Liverpool on 19 August 1951. When Alice Rimmer was battered to death, Devlin and Burns claimed they had been breaking into a factory in Manchester. A petition was circulated and a huge campaign was organised to secure a reprieve, but to no avail. ©SSPL/Manchester Daily Express
