Edward Pease, English railway manufacturer, mid 19th century. Edward Pease (1767-1858) was responsible for constructing the first railway line, running from Stockton to Darlington which opened in 1825. George Stephenson persuaded Pease to use steam traction and together they formed a company that produced the 'Locomotion' to run on that line. Pease was also a supporter of prison reform and anti-slavery groups. In 1832 he became Britain's first Quaker MP. ©SSPL/Science Museum
