CONGRESS ACTIVISTS BURN A POSTER IN CALCUTTA, 1999-01-11 (photo)

Congress activists burn a poster caricaturing Bal Thackeray, the leader of the right-wing Hindu party, Shiv Sena, outside Eden garden cricket stadium in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta on January 11. Congress, India's main opposition party, is protesting Thackeray's declaration that he will not allow the Pakistani cricket team to tour India. Last week, Shiv Sena activists dug up the pitch in Delhi, where Pakistan is scheduled to play, and threatened to damage other grounds, where Pakistan will play.
