Colonel Bendyshe Walton C.I.E. Commandant, Calcutta Volunteer Rifles, 11th January 1877 to 8th November 1878. Retired officer British Army Staff Corps. Three-quarters length portrait. The figure has auburn hair, moustache and side whiskers. He is bare-headed and wears a dark drab mess uniform. Colonel Walton entered the 53rd Regiment as Ensign in 1848 and soon after saw action at the Battle of Gujerat during the Punjab Campaign. In 1851-52 he was engaged against the hill tribes in the Peshawar Valley. In 1857 he was present at the relief of Lucknow, under Lord Clyde, when he led the storming by his regiment of the Sikandrabagh and was severely wounded. In 1859 he transferred to the 38th Regiment and was acting Brigade-Major at Dinapore in 1862. Walton joined the Bengal Staff Corps in 1864 and was appointed military store-keeper in Calcutta. He was Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Viceroy, 1879-86.
