Charles Fox, engineer, 1854-1866. Studio portrait photograph by Maull and Polyblank of Sir Charles Fox (1810-1874). Fox was constructing engineer of the London and Birmingham Railway, and designed the Watford Tunnel. As head of the firm Fox, Henderson & Company he invented the system of four-feet plates for tanks, and introduced the switch system on the railways. Fox also designed some of the buildings for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, London. He constructed the first narrow-gauge railway line in India, built the Berlin waterworks, and worked on railways in Europe, Australia, Canada and South Africa.
