BUILDING CONTRACTOR LOOKS AT CONTROVERSIAL SITE AT HAR HOMA IN JERUSALEM, 1998-12-01 (photo)

An Israeli building contractor who would only identify himself as Rami (L) and a colleague of his review the controversial building site in Arab East Jerusalem known as Har Homa, or in Arabic Jabel Abu Ghneim, as they look at a map of the proposed area overlooking the West Bank area outside Bethlehem (behind) December 1. Peace Now demonstrators tried to block some 40 contractors from entering the site and three people were arrested by Israeli police. The government is seeking tenders to build the first one-thousand housing units on the site. Rami said he would have to rethink if he would submit a tender as the area is so controversial. JWH/AA
