Francis Towne (1740-1816) Bridge and Waterfall near Llyngwellyn, 1777 Watercolour and ink Height 27.8 x Width 43.5 cm TWCMS : B8043 This view shows a waterfall on the River Lledr, close to Llewellyn Peak (the title is Towne’s own spelling). Towne sketched the scene during a tour of Wales in 1777. The paper shows a fold line, probably from being carried in Towne’s sketching portfolio. He used thin washes of transparent colour, leaving the white paper bare for the tumbling water, and outlined forms in fine pen.
