Image description

A doll made from a corn husk and leaves. It has deerskin legs and wears a long black wool skirt decorated with beadwork and ribbon, black leggings also beaded, a pink cotton overdress secured with a square silver brooch and a black shawl. An associated label on a visiting card is printed 'Rev John Philip Gell, Buxted Rectory' and hand written 'Papoose 1827. Brought home by Franklin from his second voyage to the Polar Sea, for his little daughter Eleanor Isabella'.
