Queen Maya giving birth to Prince Siddharta. Nepal, Kathmandu. The beginning of the 19th century. Partially gold and incrusted copper alloy, remnants of polychrome. Having decided to incarnate himself in the most perfect family that was, the future Buddha descended into the womb of his mother, Queen Maya, in the form of a white elephant with six defenses. At the end of a ten-month pregnancy, the child was born in the garden of Lumbini, in present-day Nepal. Seven days after the happy event — miraculous, as did conception, since Maya gave birth to her son through her right flank — the queen died.
