The fall of the ice. This year was exceptional, as never before, the number of icebergs (floating mountains of ice) that broke away from Greenland and the Arctic ice pack by the thaw, threatening the traffic of the ships between Europe and North America. The international surveillance service, established after the disaster of the Titanic - the steamer that sank in 1912, precisely because it hit an iceberg - instead of ceasing as usual on 1 July had to be protracted, to ensure the safety of the routes for transatlantic liners.
