January (Gennaio), by Benedetto da Milano upon drawing by Bramantino, c. 1503-1508, 16th century (tapestry)
Whole artwork view. Allegory of the month of January; in the middle of the scene, on a pedestal at which sides are sitting two male figures, the pagan god of transition, the two-faced Janus, brandishes a cane in his right hand, and a big key in his left hand; in the square, closed among edifices with loggias and windows, masked characters celebrate the Carnival with dances and music; in the upper band, from the left to the right, three circles representing a sun with a human face, a coat of arms and the Acquarius zodiac sign.
