McCulloch's dramatic, often romantic Highland views did much to popularise Scottish landscape painting in the Victorian era. His interest in Thomson of Duddingston's free style and his own keen study of nature led him to develop an un-academic approach to his subjects. He often painted preparatory studies on the spot before working them up in the studio. The inclusion here of the date, 9 September 1846, suggests this fluid oil sketch was such a study. Inscribed on reverse: s. b. r. "H. McCulloch September 9 1846"; inscr in pencil on old lining paper stuck to stretcher 'Loch Etive & ben Cruachan'
