PERUVIAN MOURNS FALLEN HUSBAND AT CROMOTEX PLANT, 1997-02-04 (photo)

The widow of fallen textile worker Maximo Lara wipes a tear during a homage paid to six loved-ones outside the Cromotex textile plant in Lima February 4, on the anniversary of the 1979 labour dispute in which they were killed. Rebel leader and hostage-taker Nestor Cerpa participated in the strike at the Cromotex plant, and the dispute led to the formation of the MRTA movement. Earlier, six gunshots were fired from inside the Japanese ambassador's residence in honour of the workers. Rebels seized the diplomatic compound December 17 and continue to hold 72 hostages.
