Henry Mayers Hyndman (1842-1921) founder of the 'Social Democratic Federation' (SDF), first Socialist political party in Great Britain in 1881; advocated a 48 hour working week, abolition of child labour, compulsory and free education, equality for women and nationalisation of production and distribution; among the notable members of the party were William Morris, George Lansbury, Ben Tillett, Edward Aveling, Ramsay Macdonald, Edward Carpenter, Dora Montefiore and Eleanor Marx (daughter of Karl Marx); 'Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly' was an American magazine established in 1876 by Frank Leslie as "the cheapest magazine published in the world';
