Image description

Episode taking place on the outskirts of Nancy on 31 August 1790: some soldiers and officers in garrison in the city revolted and the Constituent Assembly ordered the Marquis Francois Claude de Bouille (1739-1800), commander-in-chief of the forces of the East, to reduce the revolt. The confrontation was inevitable. A young officer of the king's regiment, Lieutenant Andre Desilles (1767-90) tried, unsuccessfully, to intervene. This canvas, commissioned by the constituent assembly, is the counterpart of the Oath of the Game of David's Palm.
