A Sea Fight off Texel. By sea the war of the Grand Alliance against France produced a series of piratical raids, in which English and Dutch shipping was destroyed by the French. Prominent amongst the French corsairs was Jean Bart, of Dunkirk, whose fleet engaged and put to flight the Dutch, under Admiral de Frise, off Texel on 29 June 1694. The Allies suffered a severe loss by the death of Cornelius van Tromp soon after his appointment as commander of the combined Dutch and English fleets.
