Kris from Java, 1811 circa.
This kris has a wavy blade with pamir and gold embellishment of vine leaves. The blade is believed to be 18th century and from central Java, while the hilt is probably from the Celebes (Sulawesi). It is thought to have been taken at the storming of Fort Cornelis at Batavia in 1811.
The expedition against the Dutch East Indian island of Java was commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Samuel Auchmutry. The capture of Cornelis (28 August 1811), stubbornly defended by a Dutch garrison under General Jan Willem Janssens, secured the island, and after the action of Samarang (8 September 1811) Janssens surrendered.
