Image description

Kurta made for Jemadar Sadda Singh, The Scinde Horse (14th Prince of Wales's Own Cavalry), 1937 circa. A kurta is a traditional item of clothing worn on the Indian sub-continent. It is a tunic or shirt falling either just above or somewhere below the knees of the wearer. Indian cavalry regiments were famed for their colourful dress uniforms and their kurtas were often decorated with splendid facings. Jemadar was the lowest rank for a Viceroy's Commissioned Officer (VCO) in the Indian Army. Jemadars either commanded infantry platoons or cavalry troops themselves or assisted their British commander. The Scinde Horse were recruited from the Pathans, Sikhs and Rajputs of the Punjab.
