Thomas Pesquet in the International Space Station (ISS) - Thomas Pesquet in ISS: Preparation of the Electrostatic Levitation Furnace (ELF), one of the state-of-the-art Japanese equipment of the Station. It allows to suspend metals in the air thanks to static electricite. Their behaviour is observed as they melt and solidify. This is what makes all the difference with the experiments carried out on the ground: in weightlessness, you can completely do without the molds that usually contain and hold metals in laboratories on Earth. This makes it much easier to observe and understand the phenomena of fusion and solidification in space without a constraining environment that hides or falsifies data. In order to carry out experiments in metallurgy, there is another furnace in the European Columbus laboratory which uses electromagnets to suspend metals. With these two equipment, the Space Station is the dream laboratory for developing the metals of the future. Working with the Electrostatic Levitation Furnace, Japan's facility that can suspend metals in mid-air as they melt and solidify using static electricity. Looking at how metals melt and solidify without the container interfering with readings is interesting for researchers on Earth, but of course it is hard to melt a metal on Earth without the sample touching anything - less of a problem in space. There is a similar facility in Europe's Columbus laboratory that uses electromagnets to suspend the metals. Both great research tools to develop the metals of the future.
