Constellation Orion - Constellation of Orio
Constellation Orion - Constellation of Orio
Orion Constellation - Constellation of Orion - Orion the Hunter is one of the most familar and best known constellations. There is extensive and varied mythology about this beautiful collection of stars, but the most common Greek legend has Orion as a giant huntsman, and he appears in this role in Homer's Odyssey. The most persistent legend seems to be that he died from the sting of a giant scorpion, which was placed in the sky so that Orion sets as the Scorpius rises, in an eternal chase across the sky. The momorable outline of the Hunter proudly bestrides the celestial equator and is equally visible from both hemispheres. The distinctive, equally spaced line of stars of Orion's Belt are more or less on the equator and are framed by quartet of bright and colourful stars. More subtle is Orions short sword, hanging from his belt. Under dark skies or in binoculars the central 'star' is distinctly misty. This is the famous Orion nebula, one of many well known telescopic objects that fill this part of the sky. The westernmost Orion Belt star delta Orionis (Minkata) is about a quarter of a degree of arc south of the celestial equator and all three belt stars are within 2 degrees of it. This means they rise and set due east or west of the observer and track the equator across the sky during the night, tracing straight lines in star trail photographs. Note that Orion is upside down as seen from the southern hemisphere, where it is often called 'the saucepan', with the Belt stars forming the base and the Sword stars the handle

Circumpolar in Ecuador - Star Trail from the Equator (Ecuador) - Star line taken from Ecuador, Ecuador. 10 hours of cumulative poses show us more than 90% of all the visible sky (the remaining 10% are drowned in solar light). A shooting star indicates the South Pole to the horizon to the left of the image. The north pole is on the right horizon. This image is an unprecedented star trail image taken from the Equator (this imaginary line that splits the Earth into the two hemispheres) in Ecuador (the country). If you stand on the Equator line you can see the Southern Pole at the horizon to the South (left of the image) and the Northern pole at the horizon on the opposite direction. The Earth rotation will make all the sky and stars look like they rotate around these two points, making them appear as concentric circles (which look like ellipses on this distorsioning fish eye image). Note that on this image, that cumulates 10 hours of exposure starting 1 hour after sunset and finishing 1 hour before sunrise (nights and days always last 12 hours on the Equator, it is a permanent equinox), more than 90% of the sky is 'visible', this is another particularity of being on the ecuator line: you can observe the largest part of the sky during any night. An extremely bright meteor appeared during that night and seems to be pointing at the Southern Pole (extreme left of the image)
Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar

Constellation of Belier - Constellation of Aries - Constellation of Belier and clusters of Pleiades (in the Taurus). Although inconspicuous, Aries is one of the constellations of the zodiac and from ancient times has been represented by a ram, the same ram whose golden fleece was sought by Jason and the Argonauts in the great ship Argo Navis. For more than 2000 years it also of astronomical importance because it was the constellation where the Sun crossed the celestial equator (ecliptic) each year at the vernal equinox, marking the first point in Aries from which right ascension is measured. Precession has now carried this point into Pisces. The constellation is the 39th largest in the sky and covers about 440 square degrees. The best - known object in this field is the Pleiades star cluster (M45 in Taurus)

The constellation Orion.
The constellations Orion and Taurus.
Stars - The view to the north from Siding Spring - Photographic pose of several hours made in Australia; the northern Celestial pole is here 30 degrees below the horizon. As the Earth rotates beneath them the stars appear to drift across the sky from east to west. From a dark site, a camera with its shutter left open will record the apparent movement of the stars. This is the view from Siding Spring Mountain, the site of the telescopes of Anglo - Australian Observatory. It is located about 30 degrees south of the equator, so the north celestial pole is 30 degrees below the northern horizon. Behind the camera the south celestial pole is about 30 degrees above the horizon
Constellation of Eridan - Constellation of Eridanus - View from the Hyadas to the Hydra Male. In the center is the great constellation of Eridan. The brightest stars visible here are Rigel, Sirius, Canopus and Achernar. In the center of image is the Eridanus constellation. Brightest stars visible are Rigel (top in Orion); Sirius (top left); Canopus (below) and Achernar (bottom center). Eridanus (the Celestial River) is very well named; since it winds its way over an enormous area of the sky. It is the 6th largest constellation (almost 1140 square degrees) and wanders over a huge range of Declination. The river runs from close to the celestial equator (which runs through Orion's Belt) to its brightest star Achernar (a Eri; from the English for 'river's end'); which is at 57* south declination

Orion's belt rising over the lights of Coonabarabran - Photographic pose of several hours on the constellation Orion. From Siding Spring Mountain, Australia, there is a clear view to the eastern horizon, directly over the small town of Coonabarabran about 26 km from the telescopes. Here we see the three distinctive trails of Orion's belt rising above the town. The rightmost star of the line of three is Minkata, and it is within a degree of the celestial equator. The point on the horizon where it rises is very close to due east and similarly its setting point is almost exactly due west. Minkata has long been an important navigation star. and its trail is a straight line, while either side of Orion's belt, towards the celestial poles, the star trails become increasingly curved.
Whale Constellation - Constellation of Cetus - Also visible, the constellation Belier at the top of the picture. Cetus (the Whale or Sea Monster) is an ancient constellation in the northern sky depicting a whale - like creature basking on the shores of the fabled stream Eridanus, which flows from the celestial equator far into the southern sky. Cetus is extensive but not very distinctive, containing few bright stars. However, some of the stars are exceptionally interesting, particlarly Mira the wonderful, the prototype variable star, whose variability was first noted 400 years ago. The constellation of Aries is visible at the top of the image

Constellations of the Little Horse, Dauphin, Fleche and Petite Fox - Constellation of Equuleus and Vulpecula - At the top right, the constellation of the Little Fox, below, the Fleche, on the left, the Dolphin; at the bottom left, the Little Horse. Equuleus (the Little Horse or colt) is a small and undistinguished constellation located about 10 degrees north of the celestial equator. It is the second smallest constellation in the sky: only Crux is smaller. It contains no bright stars, so, unlike Crux, it is difficult to find, though Delphinus is a useful guide. There is little of astronomical interest here that is accessible to small telescopes. Vulpecula, the Fox, first appears in Johannes Hevelius' atlas of 1690 and was originally called Vulpecula Cum Anser, the fox with goose, but the bird has flown and the fox is hardly obvious. The constellation crosses part of the northern Milky Way and lies just south of Cygnus. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here
Planetary nebula NGC 2346 in Unicorn - The planetary nebula NGC 2346 - This nebula is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. A binary star resides in its center. Image obtained by the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring NGC 2346 is a fine bipolar planetary nebula which is on the celestial equator in the constellation of Monoceros. It is bright and conspicuous and has been extensively studied. Among its most remarkable characteristics is its unusually cool central star, which is a 'spectroscopic binary'. The two components are identified by the effect of their movement around each other on the lines of their spectrum. The double star, which has a period of about 16 days, is also variable, probably due to dust in orbit around it. The dust itself is heated by the central star and so NGC 2346 is unusually bright in the infrared part of the spectrum

Eagle and Fleche Constellations - Aquila and Sagitta constellations - The brightest star of this constellation is Altair. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is the center of an almost perfect alignment of three stars and is located about 16 years - light from the Sun. Above the small constellation of the Fleche. Aquila (the Eagle) well represents a mythological bird that was the companion of Jupiter. It lies in the northern Milky Way and contans rich fields of stars particularly in the western half and into adjoining Scutum. The brightest star in the constellation is Altair (Arabic for flying eagle), which is at one corner of the Summer Triangle (Altair, Deneb and Vega). Sagitta (the Arrow) is the third smallest constellation in the sky, and although it contains no bright stars, was well known to the ancient Greeks. Its arrow seems directed through Vulpecula and Pegasus towards Andromeda, skirting Cygnus. These constellations are a little north of the celestial equator and can be seen from all inhabited parts of the planet. Best seen in the early evening in Augus

Galaxy NGC 1232 in Eridan - Spiral galaxy NGC 1232 in Eridanus - Image of the large spiral galaxy NGC 1232 obtained by the VLT in September 1998. In the arms, many star-forming regions are visible, while in the center of the galaxy, older resident stars. Note the presence on the left of a dwarf galaxy. NGC 1232 is located about 100 million years ago - light. The field of this photo is about 200,000 years old - light, double our galaxy, the Lactee Way. NGC 1232 is located 20 degrees south of the celestial equator, in the constellation Eridanus (The River). The distance is about 100 million light - years. The edge of the field shown here corresponds to about 200,000 lightyears, or about twice the size of the Milky Way galaxy. This image of the large spiral galaxy NGC 1232 was obtained on September 21, 1998, by the FORS instrument at VLT. The colours of the different regions are well visible: the central areas contain older stars of reddish colour, while the spiral arms are populated by young, blue stars and many star - forming regions. Note the distorted companion galaxy on the left side of the image, shaped like the greek letter “” theta””
Constellations of the Unicorn and the Little Dog - Constellations of Monoceros and Canis Minor - Constellation of the Unicorn, at its right Orion, at the top left the Little Dog with the star Procyon, at the bottom of Sirius. The stars Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse form the asterism of the winter triangle. Monoceros constellation, at right: Orion, top left Canis Minor with Procyon, bottom Sirius in Canis Major. Monoceros (the Unicorn) represents mythical creature set among the stars. This one has the forelegs and (horned) head of a horse, the hindquarters of a stag and the tail of a lion. Such creatures are sometimes seen in Assyrian (~ 2500 - 600 BCE) carvings, and have been interpreted as originating in traveller's tales of the Indian or African rhinoceros. The modern constellation sits astride both the Milky Way and the celestial equator. It is also enclosed on three sides by the bright stars of the Winter Triangle (Sirius, Procyon and Betelgeuse). Of course this refers to the northern hemisphere winter; these stars are equally visible in the southern summer and make Monoceros easy to find. However, the stars within the constellation itself are rather faint, though they can be joined tp produce a figure resembling a unicorn. The famous Rosette nebula is just visible in the only closed triangle of the constellation figure. Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog) is sometimes regarded as the smaller of the two dogs of Orion the hunter. It is minor indeed, just 185 degrees square, and 71st in size of the 88 modern constellations. The most obvious and interesting object Canis Minor is its main star, the pale yellow Procyon. Its name is from the Greek, meaning 'before the dog', since it rises before the Sirius, the Dog Star
