Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carene - Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carina - The open cluster Westerlund 2 is located about 20,000 years - light in the southern constellation of Carene, within the nebula Gum 29. About 3000 stars form this cluster. It contains a significant number of massive stars including one of the most massive stars known to date: WR 20a. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The sparkling centerpiece of this image taken by the Hubble space telescope is a giant cluster of about 3,000 stars called Westerlund 2, named for Swedish astronomer Bengt Westerlund, who discovered the grouping in the 1960s. The cluster resides in a raucous stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light - years away from Earth in the constellation Carina. To capture this image, Hubble's near - infrared Wide Field Camera 3 near - infrared pierced through the dusty veil shrouding the stellar nursery, giving astronomers a clear view of the nebula and the dense concentration of stars in the central cluster. The cluster measures between 6 to 13 light - years across. The giant star cluster is only about 2 million years old and contains some of our galaxy's hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. Some of its heftiest stars unleash torrents of ultraviolet light and hurricane - force winds of charged particles that etch at the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud. The nebula reveals a fantasy landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys. The pillars, composed of dense gas and thought to be incubators for new stars are a few light - years tall and point to the central star cluster. Other dense regions surround the pillars, including reddish - brown filaments of gas and dust. The brilliant stars sculpt the gaseous terrain of the nebula and help create a successive generation of baby stars. When the stellar winds hit dense walls of gas, the shockwaves may spark a new torrent of star birth along the wall of the cavity. The red dots scattered t
Nebula NGC 3372 in Carene - Nebula NGC 3372 in Carina - The nebula of the Carene is located about 7000 years - light from Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae (on the left, the brightest star in the picture). In the right center, a cluster of young stars, Trumpler 14. This image shows a giant star - forming region in the southern sky known as the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). The bright star on the left of the image is Eta Carinae, which is one of the most massive and luminous stars known

Open cluster NGC 3293 in Carene - Open star cluster NGC 3293 in Carina - Star cluster located in the constellation Carene about 8500 years ago - light from Earth. Unlike the Sun, many stars are found in brilliant clusters such as NGC 3293 where they spend their lives. At birth, which should have been at much the same time for all the stars in NGC 3293, the most massive stars are hot and very luminous and therefore appear as the brightest blue stars. With time they deplete their supplies of nuclear fuel, hydrogen. This evolutionary process involves cooling, so that the stars become redder, and would ordinarily disappear from view, but they also swell to gigantic proportions and so remain visible. The bright orange star in NGC 3293 is the member of the cluster which has aged fastest. This cluster is in the constellation of Carina at a distance of about 8500 light years
Super massive star Eta Carinae - Super massive star Eta Carinae - Eta Carinae is one of the most massive stars in our galaxy. Its mass would be about 120 times that of the Sun with a diameter 1000 times larger than our star. The image obtained by the Hubble space telescope reveals two expanding gas lobes; it is the nebula called the Homuncule, vestige of a huge explosion that the star experienced 150 years ago. The star blows its exterior atmosphere and will eventually explode in a supernova. Eta Carinae is located approximately 8000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Carene. A huge, billowing pair of gas and dust clouds is captured in this stunning Hubble telescope picture of the super - massive star Eta Carinae. Even though Eta Carinae is more than 8,000 light - years away, features 10 billion miles across (about the diameter of our solar system) can be distinguished. Eta Carinae suffered giant outburst about 150 years ago, when it became one of the brightest stars in the southern sky. Although the star released as much visible light as a supernova explosion, it survived the outburst. Somehow, the explosion produced two lobes and a large, thin equatorial disk, all moving outward at about 1.5 million miles per hour. Estimated to be 100 times heftier than our Sun, Eta Carinae may be one of the most massive stars in our galaxy

Detail of the nebula NGC 3324 in the Carene - Detail of nebula NGC 3324 in Carina - Detail of the nebula NGC 3324 obtained by the Hubble space telescope. This nebula is located in the southern hemisphere, close to the great Carene nebula about 7200 light years from Earth. The image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope shows a gas wall at the edge of a cavite created by the radiation and stellar winds blown by young warm stars. Hubble space telescope image shows the edge of a giant gaseous cavity within the star - forming region called NGC 3324. The glowing nebula has been carved out by intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from several hot, young stars. A cluster of extremely massive stars, located well outside this image in the center of the nebula, is responsible for the ionization of the nebula and excavation of the cavity. The image also reveals dramatic dark towers of cool gas and dust that rise above the glowing wall of gas. The dense gas at the top resists the blistering ultraviolet radiation from the central stars, and creates a tower that points in the direction of the energy flow. The high - energy radiation blazing out from the hot, young stars in NGC 3324 is sculpting the wall of the nebula by slowly eroding it away. Located in the Southern Hemisphere, NGC 3324 is at the northwest corner of the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), home of the Keyhole Nebula and the active, outbursting star Eta Carinae. The entire Carina Nebula complex is located at a distance of roughly 7,200 light - years, and lies in the constellation Carina. This image is a composite of data taken with two of Hubble's science instruments. Data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in 2006 isolated light emitted by hydrogen. More recent data, taken in 2008 with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), isolated light emitted by sulfur and oxygen gas. To create a color composite, the data from the sulfur filter are represented by re

It is the ship which Argus built for Jason and his crew, the Argonauts, to carry them on their quest for the Golden Fleece. Star formation regions NGC 3576 and 3603 in Carina - NGC 3576 (right) is located about 7000 years - light from Earth; NGC 3603 (left) is twice as far away. These two nebulae are located in the constellation Carene. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. These two star - formation regions appear side by side in the sky and seem to be linked as parts of an extensive nebula. However, the apparent intimacy is line - of - sight effect because these two objects are at quite different distances from the Sun. The curious looped nebula NGC 3576 is about 7000 light years from us while its neighbour NGC 3603 is more than twice as far away. That NGC 3603 is the more distant is confirmed by its colour, which is a ruddier red than the pinkish hue of NGC 3576. The change in colour is due to absorption of the blue - light component of the nebulosity by dust particles in the much longer line of sight. This effect is known as interstellar reddening, though it would be better described as 'de - blue'
Nebula IC 2220 in the Carene - A mass - loss star in IC 2220 - This nebula is illuminated by a giant red star, the star HD 65670. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The bright, supergiant star at the centre of this nebula is known only by its catalog designation, HD 65750. The nebulosity around the star is the result of light reflected by dust surrounding it. The dust is thought to consist mainly of particles of silica condensed from material which the star is losing from its distended surface at a fairly steady rate. The rate of mass loss is much higher than in normal stars and is sufficient to produce the reflection nebula IC 2220. The stellar nature of the central object is revealed by the four diffraction spikes extending from it. These are artifacts due to structures within the telescope. The light from the star has also produced the annular halation ring (a photographic artefact) that ornaments the nebula. These features, real or otherwise, have provoked the name 'Toby Jug' for this nebula, after the ornamental English drinking vessel or beer mug

A gravitational mirage is visible in the form of a green arc at the top right of the image; it is the image of an even farther away galaxy curved and amplified by the gravity of this cluster. An Arc at z = 3.23 in galaxy cluster 1ES 0657 - 55. The galaxy cluster 1ES 0657 - 55 is located in the southern constellation Carina (The Keel), south of the Milky Way band. Its redshift has been measured as z = 0.29. It is a source of strong and very hot X - ray emission and has an asymmetric galaxy distribution, indicating a large mass and recent formation
Nebula IC 2220 in the Carene - The IC 2220 nebula - This reflexion nebula is illuminated by a giant red star, the star HD 65670. IC2220 is a type of reflection nebula formed as a result of mass loss from its parent star, the red giant HD 65750. The yellowish red light is the reflected 1ight of this parent star. The bipolar nebula (the mass of 1/100 that of our sun) was produced in an earlier phase of intense mass loss during the “” giant”” phase of this evolving star
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - The Carina nebula, NGC 3372 - The Carene nebula is located about 7000 years from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The brightest part of the Milky Way, as seen by the unaided eye, lies in the southern constellation Carina. Here there are an unusually large number of young, hot stars. Their radiation is rich in energetic ultraviolet light. Many of these stars were born within the spectacular Carinae nebula, seen here. The nebula is a cloud of glowing gas composed mostly of hydrogen. It excited by ultrviolet light from the embedded stars. This dostictive emission radiation is responsible for the red colour. About a quarter of the nebula is made of helium gas, the second most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen, and all the other chemical elements account for only a few percent of the total mass. The brightest star in the nebula is known as eta Carinae. This remarkable object is one of the most luminous and most massive stars known

Nebula NGC 3576 in Carene - Star formation region NGC 3576 in Carina - NGC 3576 is located about 7000 years - light from Earth in the constellation Carene. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The stars that excite this unusual nebula, NGC 3576, are not visible on this photograph. They are hidden in the dusty cloud at the 'base' (south) of the huge loops of nebulosity. This is material that has been blown out by radiation pressure and stellar winds from the concealed stars. Silhouetted against the tenuous loops are dark clouds of dust with bright rims which indicate the direction of the stars which excite the nebula. This large complex of gas and dust is at about the same distance as the much brighter Eta Carinae nebula, about 7000 light years away
Nebula IC 2220 in the Carene - The IC 2220, nebula, deep image - This nebula is illuminated by a large red star, the star HD 65670. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Many stars lose a substantial part of their mass as they age. The more massive the star, the greater the fraction of their substance is lost. Much material is ejected by intense stellar winds driven from the surface of extremely hot stars and the mass loss is often only detectable in the stellar spectrum. In cooler stars temperatures may be low enough for elements or simple compounds to form solid grains in the star's outer atmosphere. This is seen as dust, and sometimes there is enough to reflect the light of the star within. As is often the case with stellar outflows, the IC 2220 reflection nebula is bipolar, hinting at conditions near the surface of the central star
Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the Carene nebula (NGC 3372) obtained by the Hubble space telescope. The image shows a column of gas eroded by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young stars. Jets are also visible, showing the presence of emerging stars. NGC 3372 is located about 7500 light years away from Earth. The colors used in this image correspond to the emissions of different gases: sulfur in red, hydrogen in green and oxygen in blue. The NASA Hubble Space Telescope photograph captures the chaotic activity atop a three - light - year - tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks. This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7,500 light - years away in the southern constellation Carina. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on Feb. 1 - 2, 2010. The colors in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulfur (red)

Long streamers of gas can be seen shooting in opposite directions off the pedestal at the top of the image. Another pair of jets is visible at another peak near the center of the image. These jets are the signpost for new star birth. The jets are launched by swirling disks around the stars, as these disks allow material to slowly accrete onto the stars' surfaces. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on Feb. 1 - 2, 2010. The colors in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulfur (red)
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - NGC 3372, Eta Carinae nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot massive stars, including the star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. This nebula is larger than the Great Nebula in Orion, but is not visible from most northern latitudes. It is a giant complex of emission and dark nebulae surrounding the unique variable star Eta Carinae, which scientists believe is the most massive and energetic star in the Milky Way galaxy. Located about 8,500 light years from the Earth, the star is about 100 times as massive as our own Sun, but produces 6 million times the light output. It was observed producing a remarkable burst of X - ray emissions that doubled its X - ray output in only four months. In the 1840's, Eta Carinae erupted visibly and was the second brightest star in the sky during this time

Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the nebula of the Carene seen in visible light (top) and infrared (bottom) by the Hubble space telescope. The top image shows a column of gas and dust eroded by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young stars. Jets are also visible, showing the presence of a nascent star. In the infrared image, the dust clouds radiate little, the nascent star responsible for these jets appears. NGC 3372 is located about 7000 light years away from Earth. Images obtained in July 2009. The pictures demonstrate one example of the broad wavelength range of the new Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) aboard the Hubble telescope, extending from ultraviolet to visible to infrared light. Composed of gas and dust, the pillar resides in a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light - years away in the southern constellation of Carina. The pair of images shows that astronomers are given a much more complete view of the pillar and its contents when distinct details not seen at visible wavelengths are uncovered in near - infrared light. The top image, taken in visible light, shows the tip of the three - light - year - long pillar, bathed in the glow of light from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of gas and dust can be seen flowing off the top of the structure. Nestled inside this dense structure are fledgling stars. They cannot be seen in this image because they are hidden by a wall of gas and dust. Although the stars themselves are invisible, one of them is providing evidence of its existence. Thin puffs of material can be seen travelling to the left and to the right of a dark notch in the centre of the pillar. The matter is part of

Heart of the nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - Eta Carinae and the Keyhole Nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 7000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae visible in the centre left of the image. Eta Carinae is a supermassive star (100 to 150 times the mass of the Sun). Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This wonderfully complex region at the heart of the NGC 3372 nebula was first described in detail by Sir John Herschel in 1838. He saw the bright circular shell visible in the upper part of the picture extending to the south to form a keyhole - shaped nebula. This luminous outline is no longer seen and the southern extension appears only as a dark dust cloud. It seems that the curious, explosively variable star Eta Carinae has enveloped itself in a cocoon of obscuring matter in the years since Herschel's observations and light from the star is no longer able to illuminate the rim of the dust cloud. The nebula thrown off by eta Car in Herschel's time has grown to the tiny orange nebula seen to the left of the dust cloud and is known as the Homunculus nebula
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene in fake colors - NGC 3372 Carina nebula in narrow band - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Image obtained by the 1.2m Schmidt UK Telescope of Siding Spring through 3 different filters that highlight oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur. Although no bright naked - eye stars are associated with the Carina nebula now, 150 years ago there blazed forth here one of the most unusual and peculiar stars ever seen. The star is known as Eta Carinae and for a few months in 1843 it was the second or third brightest star in the sky. Since then it has faded and is today about 1000 times fainter than it was at its brightest as the nebula it created during its outburst has cooled and become opaque. The whole region around Eta Carinae is rich in hot stars of which Eta is an extreme example and it is their combined radiation that produces the spectacular Carina nebula that dominates this picture. The nebula and its peculiar star are about 8000 light years away
Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the nebula of the Carene seen in infrared by the Hubble space telescope. The image reveals in the center of the image a young star accompanied by a jet of material. NGC 3372 is located about 7000 light years away from Earth. Image obtained in July 2009. Composed of gas and dust, the pictured pillar resides in a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light - years away in the southern constellation of Carina. Taken in infrared light, the image shows the dense column and the surrounding greenish - coloured gas all but disappear. Only a faint outline of the pillar remains. By penetrating the wall of gas and dust, the infrared vision of WFC3 reveals the infant star that is probably blasting the jet. Part of the jet nearest the star is more prominent in this view. These features can be seen because infrared light, unlike visible light, can pass through the dust. Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed the Carina Nebula on 24 - 30 July 2009. WFC3 was installed aboard Hubble in May 2009 during Servicing Mission 4
Nebula NGC 3603 in Carene - Star formation region NGC 3603 in Carina - NGC 3603 is located about 7000 years - light from Earth in the constellation Carene. Within this nebula, a cluster of massive stars, Wolf - Rayet stars. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Although stars are well known to form in clusters, most of the stars in the young groups we know of in our own galaxy are well separated in space. In NGC 3603 the stars are remarkably close together. Moreover, many of the stars in this compact constellation are Wolf - Rayet stars, extremely hot, massive objects, rarely found in such profusion in clusters. Exactly why some clusters form massive stars and others do not is a hot topic in astronomy, so this cluster and its environment has been extensively studied. This curious collection of young objects is, as far as we know, unique in our galaxy, though the enigmatic object at the centre of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is now known to be a similar compact cluster. The stars and their associated nebula are seen through considerable dust along the line of sight, and are dimmed and reddened by it
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene in false colours - NGC 3372 Carina nebula - Image of the nebula of the Carene (NGC 3372), a very vast region of star formation, obtained by combining light through 3 different filters that highlight oxygen in blue, hydrogen in green, and sulfur in red. The colors also represent different gas temperatures, warm, blue, colder in red. The bright star in the center of the image is Eta Carinae, a super massive star. Image obtained with the Curtis - Schmidt telescope of the Cerro Tololo Observatory. This image shows a giant star - forming region in the southern sky known as the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), combining the light from 3 different filters tracing emission from oxygen (blue), hydrogen (green), and sulphur (red). The color is also representative of the temperature in the ionized gas: blue is relatively hot and red is cooler. The Carina Nebula is a good example of how very massive stars rip apart the molecular clouds that give birth to them. The bright star near the center of the image is Eta Carinae, which is one of the most massive and luminous stars known. This picture is a composite of several exposures made with the Curtis - Schmidt telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory
Most of the area of the southern Milky Way covered by this picture never sets for those of us who live at southern latitudes south on -30 degrees. The main constellations here are Centaurus, Crux and Carina, containing some of the most interesting, beautiful and bizzare astronomical objects, including the nearest stars. Alpha Centauri is at lower left and with its companion, beta points (more or less) to the Southern Cross, which in turn lies alongside the Coalsack, one of the nearest dust clouds. Further along the Milky Way is the astonishing Carina nebula, which is home to eta Carinae, probably the most massive star known, and a prime candidate for the next Galactic supernova. It is in Carina that the Sagittarius arm of our galaxy curves sharply away from us, so we see deep into a rich star-forming region.: The Lactee Way from Centaur to Carene - Souther Milky Way form Centaurus to Carina

Massive stars in the Carene - Massive stars in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the nebula of the Carene, located about 7500 years ago - light from Earth, obtained by the Hubble space telescope. The image shows down the image a cluster of stars named Trumpler 16 which contains two very massive stars, WR 25 at Tr16 - 244. The image shows a pair of colossal stars, WR 25 and Tr16 - 244, located within the open cluster Trumpler 16, at the bottom of the image. This cluster is embedded within the Carina Nebula, an immense cauldron of gas and dust that lies approximately 7500 light - years from Earth in the constellation of Carina, the Keel. At the top of the image, a peculiar nebula with the shape of a “” defiant”” finger points towards WR25 and Tr16 - 244
Massive Stars in the Carene - Massive stars in the Carina Nebula - The image shows a cluster of stars named Trumpler 16 which contains two very massive stars, WR 25 at Tr16 - 244. WR 25 is the brightest star on the image. It is a double star composed of a star at least 50 times more massive than the Sun. Tr16 - 244 is the third brightest star in this image (top left of WR 25). It's a triple star. The second bright star in the image, to the left of WR 25, is a small star, which does not belong to this cluster and is located much closer to us. The Carene Nebula is located about 7500 years from Earth
Detail of the nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - Eta Carinae nebula detail - Detail of the nebula NGC 3372 near the star Eta Carinae (off field). Region of star formation. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in April 1999. The Hubble Space Telescope image reveals complex structure in the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). The picture is dominated by a large, approximately circular feature, which is part of the Keyhole Nebula. This region, about 8000 light - years from Earth, is located adjacent to the famous explosive variable star Eta Carinae, which lies just outside the field of view towards the upper right. The Carina Nebula also contains several other stars that are among the hottest and most massive known, each about 10 times as hot, and 100 times as massive, as our Sun
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - NGC 3372 Carina nebula - The Carene Nebula (NGC 3372) is a very large region of star formation visible in the southern hemisphere. Image obtained through 3 different filters that highlight oxygen (blue), hydrogen (green), and sulfur (red). The bright star in the center of the image is Eta Carinae, a super massive star. The Carina Nebula (also known as the Great Nebula in Carina, the Eta Carinae Nebula, or NGC 3372) is a large bright nebula that surrounds several open clusters of stars. Eta Carinae and HD 93129A, two of the most massive and luminous stars in our Milky Way galaxy, are among them. The nebula lies at an estimated distance between 6,500 and 10,000 light years from Earth. It is located in the constellation of Carina. The nebula contains multiple O - type stars. This nebula is one of the largest H II regions in the Milky Way. It has a visual magnitude of 1.0. The nebula is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in our skies. Although it is some four times as large and even brighter than the famous Orion Nebula, the Carina Nebula is much less well known, due to its location far in the Southern Hemisphere. It was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751 - 52 from the Cape of Good Hope. This is an amazingly bright nebula. This image is in the classic “” Hubble palette”” where SII is assigned to red, H - alpha to green, and OIII to blue. RGB frames were taken for star colors
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - Carina nebula NGC 3372 - The Carene nebula is located about 7500 years from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae at the bottom left of the image, the clusters of young stars Trumpler 14 (above the right of eta carinae) and Collinder 228 (below eta carinae). To the right of the image, the bright star is WR 22, a star Wolf - Rayet. Image obtained by the 2.2m ESO/MPG telescope of the La Silla Observatory in Chile. This spectacular panoramic view combines a new image of the field around the Wolf - Rayet star WR 22 in the Carina Nebula (right) with an earlier picture of the region around the unique star Eta Carinae in the heart of the nebula (left). The picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at Eso's La Silla Observatory in Chile
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene in false colours - NGC 3372 Carina nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Top right is the cluster of stars NGC 3293. Image obtained from the 1.2m Schmidt UK telescope of Siding Spring.
Star cluster in the nebula NGC 3603 - Star cluster in NGC 3603 nebula - Cluster of young stars in the nebula NGC 3603, located about 20,000 years ago - light from Earth in the southern constellation of Carene. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in August and December 2009. NGC 3603 is a prominent star - forming region located in the Carina spiral arm of the Milky Way, about 20,000 light - years away from our Solar System. This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a young star cluster surrounded by a vast region of dust and gas. Most of the bright stars in the image are hot blue stars whose ultraviolet radiation and violent winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust enveloping the cluster. This Hubble Space Telescope image was captured in August 2009 and December 2009 with the Wide Field Camera 3 in both visible and infrared light, which trace the glow of sulfur, hydrogen, and iron

It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae at the bottom left of the image, the clusters of young stars Trumpler 14 (above the right of eta carinae) and Collinder 228 (below eta carinae). Image obtained by the 2.2m ESO/MPG telescope of the La Silla Observatory in Chile. Colour - composite image of the Carina Nebula, revealing exquisite details in the stars and dust of the region. Several well known astronomical objects can be seen in this wide field image: to the bottom left of the image is one of the most impressive binary stars in the Universe, Eta Carinae, with the famous Keyhole Nebula just adjacent to the star. The collection of very bright, young stars above and to the right of Eta Carinae is the open star cluster Trumpler 14. A second open star cluster, Collinder 228 is also seen in the image, just below Eta Carinae. North is up and East is to the left. The field of view is 0.55 x 0.55 degrees, covering a 144 x 144 light - year region at the distance of the nebula. This image was produced by combining exposures through six different filters from the Wide Field Imager (WFI), attached to the 2.2 m ESO/MPG telescope at Eso's La Silla Observatory, in Chile
Detail of nebula NGC 3372 in Carene - Eta Carinae nebula detail - Detail of nebula NGC 3372 in the constellation Carene. Within the dark structures visible in this image, stars will be born. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005 and 2010. These one - light - year - tall pillars of cold hydrogen and dust, imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope, are located in the Carina Nebula. Violent stellar winds and powerful radiation from massive stars are sculpting the surrounding nebula. Inside the dense structures, new stars may be born. This image of dust pillars in the Carina Nebula is a composite of 2005 observations taken of the region in hydrogen light (light emitted by hydrogen atoms) along with 2010 observations taken in oxygen light (light emitted by oxygen atoms), both times with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. The immense Carina Nebula is an estimated 7,500 light - years away in the southern constellation Carina

Detail of the nebula NGC 3603 in the Carene - Star life cycle in NGC 3603 - In the center of the picture is a cluster of massive young stars formed from the gas surrounding them. Two pillars of gas and dust visible on the right at the top and bottom will one day form other stars, as probably the dark cloud at the top right of the image called Bok's globule. Above the left of the star cluster, an old blue supergiant star, Sher 25, arrives at the end of life. The nebula NGC 3603 is located approximately 20,000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Carene. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. This image made by the Hubble space telescope nicely illustrates the entire stellar life cycle of stars, starting with the Bok globules (dark clouds at the upper right) and giant gaseous pillars, followed by circumstellar disks and progressing to evolved massive stars in the young starburst cluster (center). The blue supergiant star Sher 25 with its ring and bipolar outflow (upper left of center) marks the end of the life cycle. NGC 3603 is located 20 000 light years away in Carina constellation
Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - The Eta Carinae Nebula and Trumpler 14 - The Carene nebula is located about 7000 years from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae (lower left, the brightest star in the picture). Top right is a cluster of young stars, Trumpler 14. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. In the small region pictured here are three of the brightest stars known in our Galaxy, each a million times more luminous than the Sun. To the left of the picture is an even more extreme star, Eta Carinae itself, shrouded in a small bright irregular nebula of its own making. In the upper right of the photograph is Trumpler 14, a cluster of very young stars which appears to be associated with a number of bright - edged 'elephant trunk' dust lanes, typical of star - forming regions. All these objects and most of the bright stars scattered across the face of the nebula are together in space at a distance of about 7000 light years. Despite this distance, the Carina nebula is clearly visible to the unaided eye to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere
Carene Constellation and Southern Constellation - Constellation of Carina and southern constellations - The constellation of Carene, the Great Magellan Cloud, the southern Celestial pole, and the star Canopus. This part of the sky is best seen in the early evening between April and June. Carina the Keel, is a remnant of Argo Navis, a giant mythical sailing vessel afloat on the southern Milky Way, described elsewhere. The constellation is a delight for southern hemisphere observers, with many star clusters and nebulae visible in binoculars or modest telescopes. Some of these are quite spectacular in a large telescope. The second brightest star in the sky, Canopus (a Car) is here as is Eta Carinae, one of the most massive and unstable stars in the Galaxy. Eta is hidden in the most conspicuous nebula in Carina, NGC 3372, the Great Carina nebula. This photograph also shows the location of the south celestial pole and the Large Magellanic Cloud as well as several complete or almost complete constellations, including Apus, Chameleon, Crux, Dorado, Mensa, Musca, Octans, Pictor and Volans
