Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) Probe - Artist's view - Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer or JUICE (formerly JGO and EJSM/Laplace) is a space mission of the European Space Agency to be launched in 2022 towards the moons of Jupiter by an Ariane 5 rocket. This space probe is to study by flying over them several times three of the ice moons of Jupiter - Callisto, Europe and Ganymede. The Jupiter iY moons Explorer (JUICE) is an interplanetary spacecraft in development by the European Space Agency (ESA). The mission is being developed to visit the Jovian system focused on studying three of Jupiter's Galilean moons: Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa all of which are thought to have significant bodies of liquid water beneath their surfaces, making them potentially habitable environments. The spacecraft is set for launch in 2022 and would reach Jupiter in 2030
Jupiter seen from its satellite Europe - Illustration - Jupiter & Io from Europa's surface - Illustration - Jupiter and Io seen from the ice surface of the satellite Europe. The surface of Europe is about five times brighter than our Moon. A crescent Jupiter hovers near the horizon along with Jupiter's volcanic satellite Io. In the foreground a meandering crevasse cleaves Europa's icy surface, one of thousands that crisscross this moon's exceedingly flat and bright exterior. The surface of Europa is about five times brighter than our own Moon and is so flat that no feature rises more than 3,000 feet
A Day on Io - 5/6 - Illustration - A Day on Io - 5/6 - Artwork: Io always points the same face towards Jupiter during his orbit and like the Moon from Earth, Jupiter presents different phases to him. This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-5. Ten and a half hours later, the sun set on the horizon of Io. Jupiter is in his last quarter phase. In the distance, a volcano erupts and the gases emitted into the thin atmosphere of Io illuminate in the magnetic field surrounding Jupiter and Io - Io keeps the same face towards Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 5. Ten and a half hours later and the sun has now set below Io's horizon. Jupiter is in its last quarter phase. A distant volcano has begun erupting and the gasse it is releasing into IO's thin atmosphere are glowing in the dense radiation field that surrounds Jupiter and Io
Jupiter seen from his satellite Ganymede - Illustration - Ridges, grooves, and craters on Ganymede - Artist's view of the surface of Ganymede, Jupiter's largest satellite. An impact crater about 15 km in diameter differs from the striated surface of the satellite. In the sky are represented Jupiter, the Europe satellite on the top right, and Io on the left of Jupiter. Jupiter's largest satellite Ganymede has a varying surface, some of which is characterized by rumpled bundles of ridges and grooves that run for hundreds of miles over a frozen surface of water - ice. They probably formed long ago when tectonic forces pulled apart Ganymede's upper crust; similar sets of faults occur in rift zones on Earth, as in eastern Africa. Subsequent meteoritic impacts have peppered - - and broken in places - - the continuity of the running formations. In this image an impact crater about 10 miles in diameter dominates a scene otherwise defined by a dozen long ridges. In the middle of the crater is a central peak, formed when the energy of the impact liquefied the crust long enough for it to rebound upward and solidify once again. Immediately above the horizon, Jupiter is still a majestic spectacle, even at a distance of nearly three times that between the Earth and its moon. Much closer on the upper right is Ganymede's sister satellite Europa. At a distance of 307 thousand miles from this vantage point, Europe is only a quarter again as far as the Earth is from its moon. To the lower left of Jupiter at nearly a million miles is Jupiter's volcanic satellite Io

Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) - Artist view - Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) - Artist view - Artist view of the EJSM (Europa Jupiter System Mission) mission, with Nasa's Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) probe and ESA's Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter (JGO) probe. This mission proposes an in-depth exploration of Jupiter's system and its moons to study the emergence of habitable worlds around giant planets. JEO will explore Jupiter and the Io satellite, then further study Europe; JGO will explore Jupiter and the Callisto moon and will enter into orbit around Ganymede for a comprehensive and detailed study. Launch planned around 2020. Artist's concept of the two Europa Jupiter System Mission spacecraft - Nasa's Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) and the European Space Agency's Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter (JGO) exploring the Jupiter system. Possible launch in 2020

Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto - New Horizons over Pluto and Charon - Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto and its largest satellite Charon. The New Horizons probe was launched on 19 January 2006 to Jupiter, then Pluto and Charon, which it will reach in 2015 and Kuiper's objects in 2020. Nasa's New Horizons unmanned spacecraft over dwarf planet Pluto and its moon Charon. New Horizons has been en route to Pluto since its launch from Earth in 2006 and is scheduled to make its closest approach on 14 July 2015. New Horizons is about the size and shape of a grand piano and weighed 1,054 pounds at launch. The high - gain dish antenna is about 7 feet in diameter and is employed for communication with the Earth. In this image the New Horizons spacecraft is about 10,000 miles from Pluto (upper right), 22,000 miles from its largest moon Charon (upper left) and 2.97 billion miles from the Earth. Dominating this side of the spacecraft with an 8 inch aperture is the Long - Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), a digital camera with a large telephoto telescope fortified to operate in the cold, hostile environs of deep space. At 90 days before closest approach to Pluto, Lorri's images will surpass the quality of the best Hubble Space Telescope images of Pluto. While little is known about Pluto's appearance, here this Kuiper belt dwarf planet is realized as a frozen world covered with various ices, hosting a thin atmosphere of nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons too possibly, with a significantly weathered surface as Pluto's 248 - year orbit alternately brings it closer then further from the warmth of the sun

A Day on Io - 2/6 - Illustration - A Day on Io - 2/6 - Artwork: Io always points the same face towards Jupiter during his orbit and like the Moon from Earth, Jupiter presents different phases to him. This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-2. A few hours later, the Sun moved to the right, brightly illuminating the satellite surface - Io keeps the same face toward Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 2. A few hours later, the sun appears to have moved to the right, lighting up the landscape brightly
Jupiter from his satellite Themisto - Illustration - Jupiter from Themisto - Illustration - Jupiter and its Galilean satellites (from left to right Ganymede, Europe, Io and Callisto) seen from his satellite Themisto. Themisto is a small satellite only 8 km in diameter. This is how Jupiter and its Galilean satellites may appear from the surface of Jupiter's tiny moon Themisto. At a distance of 4.7 million miles, Jupiter subtends an angle of 1.1 degrees (the moon subtends an angle of 0.5 degrees in Earth's sky). The Galilean satellites are, left to right, Ganymede, Europa, Io, and on the far right Callisto. Themisto is the next significant body orbiting Jupiter beyond Callisto. Beyond Themisto are another 54 known jovian satellites. With a mean diameter of only 5 miles and an albedo (surface brightness) about half that of the Moon, no earthbound telescope or interplanetary probe has yet revealed any details of Themisto's surface. In this image the artist is suggesting that Themisto has an ancient, dusty and heavily cratered surface with the occasional - - and fanciful - - outcropping dirty water ice
A Day on Io - 4/6 - Illustration - A Day on Io - 4/6 - Artwork: Io always points the same face towards Jupiter during his orbit and like the Moon from Earth, Jupiter presents different phases to him. This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-4. At mid-day Io, the Sun is behind and the shadow of the satellite is projected on Jupiter - Io keeps the same face towards Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 4. Halfway through the day, the sun is now behind us. We can see the tiny shadow of Io on the cloudtops of Jupiter

This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-3. About ten hours in Io day, Jupiter is in the first quarter phase - Io keeps the same face toward Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 3. Lava lake on Io - Illustration - Lava lake on Io - Artist's view of a lava lake on the surface of Io, one of Jupiter's satellites. There are places on Io where molten lava has been observed actively welling up from beneath the surface of this otherwise frozen world. Lavas on Io were originally thought to be molten sulfur, but with caldera temperatures far exceeding 1,000o F - - too hot for liquid sulfur - - these eruptions are now thought to be primarily molten silicate rocks. In this image a dormant volcanic caldera re - awakens with a surge of new lava that breaks up and melts a frozen crust. A gibbous Jupiter hangs over the horizon
A Day on Io - 6/6 - Illustration - A Day on Io - 6/6 - Artwork: Io always points the same face towards Jupiter during his orbit and like the Moon from Earth, Jupiter presents different phases to him. This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-6. At the end of the day, the Sun is just below the horizon to the left. He's about to get up and disappear again behind Jupiter. Io takes about 42 hours to go around Jupiter - Io keeps the same face toward Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 6. Near the end of the day and the sun is just below the left horizon. It will be rising soon only to disappear again behind Jupiter

Jupiter seen from its satellite Europe - Illustration - Jupiter from Europa's surface - Illustration - Jupiter seen from the icy surface of the satellite Europe. Europa is Jupiter's fourth largest satellite and is slightly smaller than the Earth's Moon. Europa is believed to be composed of silicate rocks with a layer of water ice covering the entire surface. This image is inspired by recent discoveries on Europa of regions that look very much like pack - ice on Earth's polar seas during spring thaws. The perspective is from an altitude of several thousand feet. The large crater in the foreground is about a half - mile in diameter. It may be that beneath Europa's surface ice there is a layer of liquid water, perhaps as much as 30 miles deep. This subsurface “” ocean”” would be kept liquid by tidally generated heat

The Moon, Venus and Jupiter - Crescent Moon, Venus and Jupiter - The Moon and Planets Venus (bottom) and Jupiter (right) seen on 1 December 2008. Two satellites of Jupiter are also visible, Ganymede and Callisto. A beautiful conjunction between the crescent Moon with Earthshine, brilliant Venus, and mighty Jupiter is seen in the fading twilight on the first day of December, 2008. These images were shot with a simple zoom lens on a digital camera on a fixed tripod. The Moon, at magnitude -7.9, is a waxing crescent, 4 days old. The crescent is lit by the direct light of the Sun. The “” dark”” side of the Moon can also be seen, lit by Earthshine - sunlight reflected from the day side of the Earth. Jupiter, at right, shines at magnitude -2.0. Venus, at the bottom of the image, shines at magnitude -4.1. Above and to the right of Venus, two faint 6th magnitude stars in Sagittarius can be seen. Two of Jupiter's four Galilean moons can also be seen, one on each side of the planet. Ganymede, at magnitude 5.1 is the brightest and is to the upper left of Jupiter. Callisto, at magnitude 6.1 is to the lower right of the planet. Io and Europa are too close to the planet to be resolved in this image

Surface de Callisto - Illustration - Spires on Callisto - Illustration - Artist's view of erodes ice peaks on the surface of Callisto. In May 2001 Nasa's Galileo spacecraft took the highest resolution images of any of Jupiter's satellites. The images were of the southeastern perimeter of Callisto's massive Asgard impact basin and what they revealed was unlike anything seen before in the Solar System: bright, icy spires rising from an otherwise relatively flat, cratered terrain. The spires may consist of material thrown outward from a major impact billions of years ago. In this image dozens of knobby spires rise into the airless void to twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. Over the eons the dirty ice in the spires has slowly eroded, leaving the non - ice materials to slide down and collect around the base of the spires. As this location is on the side of Callisto that always faces away from Jupiter (the “anti - Jupiter” side), its jovian host would never appear above the horizon
Astronauts explore Callisto - Illustration: Astronauts explore the erodes peaks of Callisto - Astronauts among eroded peaks of its moon Callisto - Several square miles of the surface is dominated by towering spires of ice, 260 to 330 feet (80 to 100 m) tall. While composed mostly of ice, the spires also contain some darker dust, which absorbs heat from the Sun. As the ice erodes, the dark material apparently slides down and collects in low-lying areas. As the ice continues to vaporize, the dark material accumulates and the erosion process accelerates

A probe explores Europe's underground ocean - Illustration - Europa Submersible Probe - Illustration - Artist's view of a space probe exploring Europe's underground ocean. Ice covers the surface of this Jupiter satellite; it is believed that under the tens of km thick of this ice, water in the liquid state could exist. A remote - controlled submersible probe pokes around beneath the icy mantle of Europa. The probe is designed to fit down a narrow hole, with the lights mounted on deployable rods, and small motorized wheels mounted on the fairings (hard to see here). Antennae trail behind. Power and warmth are provided by a SNAP generator near the rear. Stereo cameras are in front. Water intakes for chemical analysis are behind the front fairing. Attitude control is provided by small thrusters. Main propulsion comes from a small propellor equipped with a Kort nozzle
