Golden sunlight sets off this picturesque ruin on the North-East coast near Cullercoats. Cliff erosion had brought the sea close to the building by the time this picture was painted. The building was known as Sparrow Hall in the 19th century, because it had a bird carved above the door. This was actually a dove, as the house was built for Thomas Dove in 1681-82. Charles Hemy painted this picture shortly before he moved from the North East to the south of England;
