This one of a number of watercolours that William Havell painted of the Thames Valley, his home area. It is painted in the broad washes that Havell used in the early part of his career. The picture is an example of the larger and more densely coloured w/cs that artists started producing after about 1805 (though this picture has suffered somewhat from fading during its life). William Havell was a founder member of the Society of Painters in Water Colour, London, in 1804;
