Image description

This is the earliest surviving Sienese depiction of the Virgin crowned as Queen of Heaven. The city of Siena was dedicated to Mary, and this subject was often represented by local artists. The Latin text held by Christ reads: ‘Come my chosen one and let me place you on my throne.’ The painting is a fragment of a larger structure. Originally it formed the top of an altarpiece. Guido is one of the earliest painters we know of from Siena. The Virgin’s darkly outlined eyes, and the precise drapery lines are typical of his style.
