YAWALAPITI INDIANS DANCE IN VILLAGE INSIDE XINGU RESERVE IN THE LOWER AMAZON, 2002-05-12 (photo)

Yawalapiti indians practice a ritualistic tribal dance inside their  village in the Alto Xingu, part of the lower Amazon, on May 12, 2002.  Naked, except for feather headdresses, paint from neck to ankle and  belts with tassels over the genitals, the tribe's men and women  practice the kuarup dance, marching back in forth in the central area  of the village. Life is still communal, with each hut housing an  extended family, and everyone sleeps in hammocks. The Yawalapiti are  one of 17 tribes living inside the Xingu Indigenous Park, a reserve  created in 1961 roughly the size of Belgium, to protect the indians,  and is home to an estimated 4,000 people.
