Image description

A lifeguard looks out over an exposed crater along the boardwalk, torn up by heavy waves, at Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, April 20. Raging surf, whipped up unseasonably by the La Nina weather phenomenon, ripped through world-famous Ipanema beach, punching a crater in the boardwalk and destroying a section of the lifeguard station. The area has been declared a no-swim zone because of raw sewage being dumped into the surf as the result of a leak in a pipeline which was being repaired. A city environment official said the churning breakers may help clean the seawater, but may have also spread contamination further. GN/HB
