3 congas, shaped drums: a tall, narrow, single-headed Cuban drum with African antecedents, thought to be derived from the Makuta drums associated with Afro-Cubans of Central African descent. The Cuban conga is staved, like a barrel. Used both in Afro-Caribbean religious music and as the principal instrument in Rumba. Now very common in Latin music, including salsa music, merengue music, Reggaeton, as well as American popular music. Used here in the modern symphony orchestra by Harrison Birtwhistle, in his Mask of Orpheus, (for the BBC Proms 2009).
