Image description

Oswald Mosley ( 1896 – 1980, 6th Baronet) English politician, known principally as the founder of the British Union of Fascists in 1932. MP from 1926 to 1931, during which time he crossed the floor from Conservatives to Labour. The BUF (including the Blackshirts) were often involved in violent confrontations, most notably in the Battle of Cable Street (1936) when they attempted to march through an area with a high proportion of Jewish residents. In1940 Mosley was interned, along with all active fascists in Britain and his BUF party was proscribed. He was released in 1943, and spent the rest of the war under house arrest. His post-war attempts at politics were unsuccessful. Married to Diana Mitford.
