Image title
Holmes Bank and James Holmes' residence, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1899 (b/w photo)
On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Own plate '99. Holmes Bank and James Holmes' residence adjoining. In one of the houses (which ran along where Graham's built the large premises in the picture) there resided at one time Lady Bessborough/Bilborough? A friend of Lord Byron, and Dr Burman with other notabilities of the period. The actual position of these houses, other than Holmes, is not now known - so far as I am aware. 8/32 - In the 1868 official survey of the town the terrace, at right angles to thehouses heading S from the Quay, the nearest of which being Holmes' Bank, consisted of seven houses, and Graham's large building, which was intended to become an hotel, (and failed to do so) obliterated four of them; and now all are gone. Moses Hampton, who for long years ran the provision shop on the west side died in the late Spring of 1932 at over 90. Mr James Archibald Brown figures as 'reporter' living in Woodhouse Terrace in 1883. Thwaites' Isle of Man'. Peel Boat, No 274, the Minnie, in harbour."
