East end of Almshouse Lane, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "The same side of Almshouse Lane at E end into Stowell's Lane. The old almshouses just seen on L." Additional note: "Mr Hyde's office in the old Almshouses L. His wife was daughter of Cretney the Schoolmaster, 'Lame Cretney' of James Cowin's (Belvedere) 'Reminiscences', Herald Office 1902 (?) mid-last century. He lived in Athol Place, one of the two cottages set back with gardens, at the S end of St George's Walk. Most of the school masters at that time had a physical disability, but it was usually baldly coupled with their surname. I see I have noted this on print FW 75 - (print 28)."
