Two rows of mourners holding candles stand beside the coffin which is covered with the arms of England. A man forbids the obsequies, claiming the abbey stood on ground wrongfully seized from him by William. In background, two altars with officiating priests, and a cloister in which a monk is walking. On right; William Rufus kneels and is crowned by Archbishop Lanfranc, seated beneath a green canopy; a group of men witness the ceremony.
